No bog-standard stability analysis for a wide profile in Essen, Germany
Last year, S & P Consult was tasked by Stadtwerke Essen with an extended assessment and evaluation of the condition of the combined sewer "Graitengraben" in Altenessen. The section to be inspected was about 750 m long, with four different cross sections and three special sections. In addition to the extended evaluation of the condition, we paid special attention to the appraisal of the stability analysis of the sewer section.

Nevada Contract brings total awards to Insituform to more than $24 Million in 2009
Insituform to perform sewer pipe rehabilitation without disruption to county neighborhoods and businesses: Insituform Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq Global Select Market: INSU) announced the Clark County Water Reclamation District in Nevada has awarded an additional $6.8 million contract to Insituform for sewer pipe rehabilitation. In total, Clark County has awarded Insituform, a pre-qualified contractor, more than $24 million in contracts so far in 2009. Insituform’s cured-in-place (CIPP) technology rehabilitates sanitary sewers, storm sewers and force mains without the need for digging.

Bondi residents help reduce sewer overflows
Bondi residents are helping protect local waterways and reduce sewer overflows in the beachside suburb by removing tree roots from their private sewerage pipes. Sydney Water Managing Director Kerry Schott thanked Bondi residents for their positive response to a recent trial that identified tree roots entering the public sewerage system from privately-owned pipes.

Gotthard Breakthrough is cheered In Amsteg
Huge Reception For Tunnel Boring Machine Gabi 1. The Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine 'Gabi 1' reached its target destination of Amsteg in the middle of June 2009 – six months ahead of schedule. Politicians, tunnel workers and 650 guests cheered on the tunnel boring machines as it arrived. This final breakthrough by the first machine in the Erstfeld-Amsteg section constitutes the achievement of an important milestone at the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Moritz Leuenberger, member of the Swiss Federal Council, congratulated the tunnel constructors on their excellent performance at the last stage target.

Robbins Double Shield Gears Up for India Water Tunnel
Onsite Assembly of second TBM completed at Veligonda: Beneath India’s largest tiger sanctuary, the Nagarjuna Sagar National Park, tunnel boring machines are orchestrating one of the largest water transfer schemes in India. The second of three 10.0 m (32.8 ft) High Performance (HP) Robbins Double Shields that will bore under the park was assembled in late May 2009. The machine is scheduled to be launched in June for a 19.2 km (11.9 mi) long tunnel in the arid state of Andhra Pradesh.

Agreement will create a competitive and innovative leader in epoxy-based solutions for the trenchless industry – Dow Systems, a global business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow), and RS Technik Group (including RS Technik, RS Lining Systems and Maxliner) announced today that they will form a global commercial alliance focusing on the sewer pipeline rehabilitation market, specifically on the trenchless technology called cured-in-place pipe (CIPP). This alliance will combine Dow’s high-technology performance resin systems, characterized by high chemical resistance and mechanical properties, with the state-of-the-art CIPP technology developed and owned by RS Technik Group. Clem7 tunneling complete with final breakthrought
Tunnelling on the Clem Jones Tunnel (CLEM7) in Australia is complete after the second tunnel boring machine broke through at Woolloongabba on 26.05.2009. The breakthrough represents an important milestone for the CLEM7 with both 4,000-tonne boring machines (named Matilda and Florence) having completed their historic 4.3 kilometre journey from Bowen Hills to Woolloongabba. RiverCity Motorway Group CEO Flan Cleary said the successful completion of tunnelling on the CLEM7 represented one of Brisbane’s greatest ever engineering achievements.

Water management in Vietnam
Management of industrial wastewaters from the metal processing industries and decision support for municipal planning of wastewater management measures were the topics of the workshops held on 14 and 15 May, 2009 in Nam Dinh/Vietnam, bringing together actors from industry and local government. The workshop was prepared and organized by Fraunhofer UMSICHT in collaboration with the Vietnamese Institute of Geological Science, the Nam Dinh Provincial Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and the People´s Committee Nam Dinh in the framework of the BMBF funded research project IWRM Vietnam. The research project focuses on methods to implement an Integrated Water Resources Management concept in order to enhance improved and sustainable water and land use in river basin areas.

New Robbins Mexico Office will Support Local EPB Projects
Subsidiary will provide Management for Two Mexico City Mega Tunnels: A new Robbins office is now operating in Mexico City, initially to provide services on two local mega projects using four Robbins EPBs. Robbins Mexico opened March 1 and offers project management services to both Mexico City Metro Line 12 and Emisor Oriente projects. The city’s new metro line, which will utilize a 10.2 m (33.5 ft) diameter EPB on a 6.2 km (3.9 mi) long tunnel, is scheduled to begin in late 2009. Emisor Oriente, a 62 km (39 mi) long wastewater line requiring multiple TBMs, will see the launch of three Robbins EPBs in 2010.

New Publication: Guideline for the Appraisement of Sewer Networks
The guideline that will be forthcoming in the German language is an essential assistance for network operators to appraise sewer networks both in detail and consistently. Only by a well-grounded assessment and evaluation of these installations can a proper and regular balancing be ensured. Furthermore, a strong balancing is the prerequisite for a sustained management of the drain and sewer systems in the sense of the existing inter-generation contract that results from the long-life cycle of those systems. Here, sewer operators have the possibility to carry out the necessary collections and evaluations of data either on their part or contract out the services - also in parts - to external service providers.

New Ditch Witch JT100 Directional Drill Gives Power Where Power Is Due
The Ditch Witch® organization announces the release of its most powerful directional drill, the JT100 Mach 1. Equipped with a 268-hp (200 kW) engine, the JT100 is designed so that rotation, thrust, and drilling fluid flow can operate simultaneously at full power, which leads to faster job completion. With 100,000 lb (445 kN) of pullback and 12,000 ft•lb (16 270 N•m) of torque, the JT100 is a directional drill built for both long-range bores, such as river crossings, and installations of large-diameter pipe. The power of the JT100 allows for the addition of two optional features that can save the contractor significant time and money. One is an onboard crane, which is used to load and unload pipe boxes, anchor the unit, and handle downhole tools, especially drill pipe. Directional drills without an onboard crane require additional equipment, such as an excavator, to perform these functions. The other optional feature is an onboard anchor system—an exclusive Ditch Witch equipment option—that stabilizes the machine on virtually any terrain. Directional drills without this feature typically have to be anchored to another heavier piece of equipment, such as a backhoe or track hoe, to maintain stability during drilling operations.
